The Tar Heel Tavern #63

THE TAR HEEL TAVERN #63 is here! Thanks to Screwy Hoolie of Scrutiny Hooligans, Mr. Ogre of Ogre's Politics and Views, Kehaar of Silfray Hraka, Melina of Pratie's Place, Bora of Science & Politics, Billy the Blogging Poet, Dave of Anonymoses, Jude of Iddybud, and Jim Caserta for your fine submissions. Brian R. of Audio Activism and Anton Zuiker of mister sugar, hope you don't mind that I snagged your posts for the carnival. I've enjoyed taking a trip around the NC blogosphere with you all.

This week's theme was immigration/family history, inspired by the immigration news of late, and we have posts ranging from discussions of proposed NC immigration legislation to strange first date doings (a cliffhanger!) to a pictorial slice of old South history. You'll find our posts in two categories: Immigration (Pro, Con, and Beyond) and Family, Place, and Personal History. There is also a wonderful meta post by Bora which discusses, among other things, Anton's StoryBlogging project. One note: rather than using the blurbs folks sent along, I've pulled a quote out of each post to entice the reader.

Enjoy, and be sure to stay tuned for next week's Tar Heel Tavern!

                                        ==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==

IMMIGRATION (PRO, CON, AND BEYOND):

ANONYMOSES: The Immigrant Problem in America, circa 1650.

The year is 1650. English immigrants are pouring into North America with no letup in sight.

Scrutiny Hooligans: Taylor Campaign Fights to Regain Credibility - Part Two, HR 4437.

While President Bush's plan creates an indentured subclass, Taylor's HR 4437 creates an indentured subclass and an institutionalized criminal class.

Ogre's Politics & Views: Good Immigration Law?

Democrats LIKE illegal invaders and criminal aliens. Want change?

Jim Caserta: Immigration.

America is a promise of an opportunity to make your and your children's lives better. Results are not guaranteed, but opportunity should be.

Iddybud: Syracuse: Public Mass in Support of Moral Immigration Reform.

At the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Syracuse, N.Y. last Tuesday, a cardboard sign in the shape of a white dove with blue trim graced the steps of the altar bearing the simple phrase: "I leave peaceprints."

Billy The Blogging Poet: Oh Say Can You See...

They said all men are created equal--
they even wrote it down--
so does that make all men illegal?

FAMILY, PLACE, AND PERSONAL HISTORY:

Pratie Place: La heroina Melina y el Borracho Guapo.

Melina and Borracho settle down in a booth next to a life-size statue of a werewolf biting the neck of a fair damsel, and yak for several more hours.

mistersugar: Spring renewal.

I’m editing my grandfather’s memoir of his childhood on a Wisconsin farm, so maybe I’ll learn if there’s some dark family secret.

Brian at Audio Activism is asking us to help build community history!

Silflay Hraka: Signs of the South.

When you stop and take the time to look up and around, you find more than you realize are there.

BONUS META POST!

Science and Politics: StoryBlogging and more...

The history will not be written only by winners, and, gasp, by semi-automated textbook-writing committees, but by many, many eye-witnesses of the events, each bringing in something personal, a slightly different perspective, a new anecdote, a curious fact or a piece of trivia.

Sadly, I don't have a post in the carnival, having run out of time at the end of the week. I plan to write one on topic later today, and if you're a little late, too, send yours in, and I'll do an update! Thanks, all, and enjoy!

The Tar Heel Tavern -- Call For Submissions

I'm hosting The Tar Heel Tavern this week, and it's my first time, so let's have a big showing, Tar Heels!

This week's theme, because immigration has been in the news so much lately, is family heritage/history. I'll leave it to you to determine what that means for you. Anyone who's written more specifically on immigrants and immigration directly is welcome to send those posts along as well, of course.

Bora's rules are that these should be new posts written since the last carnival, but since this is late notice, we'll bend the rules a bit and allow an older piece on this topic or an off-topic but interesting piece from this week.

Please send:

  • Blog name
  • URL
  • URL of your post
  • Brief description of your post

to me (arsepoetica AT gmail DOT com) -- with subject line TAR HEEL TAVERN -- by Saturday, May 6, at 8 pm, and I'll have The Tar Heel Tavern #63 up on Sunday. Thanks, everyone! I'm looking forward to it.

P.S. If you're a little late in sending your entry, no biggie. Send it along when you can, and I'll do my best to squeeze it in.
