BUT, think about this—What does that headline really mean? Does it mean that “Most Americans say U.S. on wrong track”, because America really is on the wrong track? Or is it that “Most Americans say U.S. on wrong track” because what the media is pumping out actually affects what and how people think?

What is happening here is a constant daily bombardment from the government and from the media of pure, unadulterated liberalism—Anti-war, Katrina, Global Warming, Class Envy, etc. A lot of people sit around and over 20 years of a bombardment, watching television every day, you're going to soak some of it up. You're going to start to believe it. And then if your friends believe it, nobody wants to argue with their friends, and then you couple it with the fact that a lot of people want their lives to have meaning and all these liberal causes, supporting them, can make people think their lives are going to mean something. Liberals are very smart about this, and they're patient. Because they're content to dominate news cycles, set the agenda, and as long as it takes, they're still controlling everything because there's not a political party around that's refuting the agenda or the premise.

ima asshole

I disagree with that 81% of America and my friends consider me to be liberal in most areas.

America is headed in the right direction. It's the people who need to be reformed via an unsympathetic hard line regime that does not keep trying to socialize our capitalist economy. The war was good for America. The war resulted in more jobs in certain sectors of the American economy, including defense, energy, and construction contracting. The real failure here is not our government, but the people who have failed to adapt to changing times. You see a lot of engineers, software developers, etc complaining about lost jobs. Why aren't these people applying to Shell, Halliburton, KB&R, and the other places that thrived during the war period? When you have to put food on the table, you have to put aside ethical concerns and adapt to changing times.

Also, I live in Southern California, and quite frankly, I'm amazed at the fiscal irresponsibility I see here. I go into work and cannot believe the unbelievable stupidity of these people who insist on buying new automobiles every 3 years and take out jumbo mortgages they clearly cannot afford. Everyone knows an ARM will reset, why wouldn't you PLAN financially for something like that? I had one new hire from college who I had to let go. His comment to me was that "What? But I just bought this new Lexus two weeks ago!!! This is my first job, how am I going to make payments on it now?"

Is that poor fiscal judgment President Bush's fault? I don't think so. American people are a spoiled and whiny bunch. The phrase "headed in the right direction" usually is all about money and nothing else.

People need to self-flagellate for their individual stupidity and cheer up and move on. Life does not wait for people who dwell and mope about current state of the union, whether you think it is good or bad.
