Guess I'm a Pessimist
My pal Joanne thought I might need a little pick me up this morning, presciently anticipating that I did not, in fact, have time to check the funny pages in my usual mad dash out the door, frenzied attempts to answer 6 trillion and one emails, and recovery from the usual brain-exploding response I had to the "news" in the morning.
Can we give Nicole Hollander a Congressional Medal of Honor? Or at least induct her into the Highest Order of the Snark or something? And why does all of our speaking truth to power have to come in the form of comedy? What compelled Oscar Wilde to say, "If you want to tell people the truth, make them laugh. Otherwise, they'll kill you"? Well, they did try to kill him, didn't they? Damn.
Thank you, Sylvia, for helping to maintain my precarious emotional/intellectual equilibrium!

Huh, I don't know much about attempts on Oscar's life, but I can tell you that they knocked the willie off the sculpture on his tombstone in the Cimitiere Pere de Lachaise in Paris.

Congogirl, the casual (and not so casual) violence in the world never ceases to amaze me.

I love Sylvia - thanks for reminding me of it...it's been a while since I read a newspaper that carries it, but since the comics I like are online, I'll be checking it out again.

Hi, Alicia! Sylvia really has kept me sane; I'm not kidding. It helps me not to feel crazy. I don't know how people walk around as if democracy isn't crumbling.
Re: newspapers and comics, I realize I only read one physical newspaper (unless I'm traveling), and that's our awesome local alt-weekly, which carries This Modern World and a couple of others. No Sylvia though, so I have to get my fix online, too.
